Chocolate Recipes Delights Tiny Hands Can Make

Posted July 3rd, 2009 by admin

Kids love to bake and make delicious treats from the kitchen. Giving them opportunities to make their own chocolate recipes or other tasty treats will delight them. Here are just some ideas on little chocolate decadent dreams that your children can make without much help.

Hot Fudge Sundae

This is one of the simple chocolate recipes around for your child to make and then delight afterwards. All you need is a pint of ice cream (chocolate or vanilla), hot fudge, whipped cream and any tiny, tasty toppings your child would like to put on top (such as cherries, sprinkles, nuts, etc.).

Store bought hot fudge will work just fine for this project as it is easier for your child to prepare. Have your child get a bowl and scoop out 3 or 4 scoops of ice cream into the bowl. Then have them heat up the hot fudge in a microwave following the instructions on the bottle or jar and pour over the ice cream.

Next, they will either scoop or spray the whipped cream on top of the hot fudge (depending on the type of bottle they got). Have them finish off with their favorite decorative toppings. Eat and Love it!

Chocolate M&M Crispy Bars

Chocolate recipes filled with gooey marshmallow and lots of chocolate is every child’s dream to make and eat. Chocolate M&M Crispy bars are so easy to make and so good to eat! They can be whipped up in as little as 10 minutes and can be eaten once cooled. What you need is:

- 1/4 cup of butter
- 1 (10 oz., approx. 40) pkg. of regular marshmallows or 3 cups of miniature marshmallows
- 6 cups of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies
- 1 cup M&Ms (can be substituted with nestle chocolate chips)

In a microwave safe bowl, heat up butter and marshmallows for 2 minutes in microwave. Stir when melted. Microwave again for an additional minute. Stir in Rice Krispies and M&Ms and press into a pan that you have buttered or sprayed with a non-stick spray or have lined with wax paper. Allow to cool.

Spending a day with children making different types of chocolate recipes can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your kids. It teaches that family time is both fun and important. On the next rainy day, have your child put on their Betty Crocker hat and whip up some fun in the kitchen.

Toys That Were Once So Popular

Posted July 3rd, 2009 by admin

The evolution of toys over the last hundred years is truly staggering. We have all but said goodbye to the traditional, individually handmade toys and now embraced mass-produced electrical toys that have lights and sounds and eat batteries like grains of rice.  Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic traditional toys and why they were loved so much

Rag dolls. These toys are beautifully simplistic. They were once the coolest toy to have and everywhere a child would go, her rag doll would go with her. Among their most appealing features was the ability to wash them simply by dunking them in warm water and not having to worry about bits breaking or falling off. These days Barbie and crying replica babies are all the rage. These cannot be washed using the same method but I would encourage you to give it a go.

Wooden bikes. Due to bike makers wanting to make the biggest profit they can, most bikes these days are constructed of metal or some form of plastic. You cannot beat however a hand-crafted bike made out of high quality hardwood. They didn’t break down anywhere near as much as modern bikes do and the aging wooden looked beautiful. On top of this, having an old wooden bike a room added a lot of character to it and people even bought them just for their aesthetic value

Rocking horses
. Much like the wooden bike, a rocking horse made from fine wood not only looked stunning in any home but also lasted a lifetime due to its simple yet effective design. The best bit about a rocking horse however is that you can buy your daughter what she has always dreamed of,  without having to hire stables and muck it out every day. Rocking horse manufacture has slowed down a great deal in the last 10 years, but you can still find some quality ones in some good shops.

Coloring Pictures Is A Lot Lot Than Just Fun

Posted July 3rd, 2009 by admin

It goes without saying that when a child sits down with a set of crayons and colored pencils and begins coloring pictures, it puts a big smile on his or her face. Nothing pleases a parent more than seeing their child joyful. Though  coloring, whether it be with a coloring book or printed coloring sheets from the Internet spark up something way more than just a smile.

Children are like a sponge. They learn everything around them. Their major control is their parents. Parents have the ability to “form” their child’s behavior or foundation of who they will turn out to be from the start by the things they offer front of them. In other words, your child can become a creative artist just as easily as they can become a couch potato.

So why not turn your child’s creative imagination on rather than their interest for cartoons. How do you do this?

Introduce them to the fascinating world of coloring pictures available online. There are websites on the Internet that give your child a variety of different activities where they can stretch their mind and indulge in a little creativity. These activities, usually in the form of coloring sheets that your child can color both online or print and color offline, are a great way to start your child off in the right direction of learning.

Coloring online provides a good base for your child to build up their artistic talent. There are countless levels of joy for your child start with effortless patterns and shapes for the new artist to more complex designs to keep your child involved and challenged.

Other ways coloring pictures online can help your child

1. They develop your children into creative thinkers by providing different pictures, shapes, and scenarios.

2. Promote a positive mental well-being. Children who spend their time creating colorful masterpieces are less likely to suffer from common problems such as depression.

3. Interactive coloring sites improve your child’s concentration. This helps prevent or improve child ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

As you can see, coloring pictures are much more than smiles and giggles. It opens up endless possibilities for your child to use their minds and imaginations. It keeps them doing creative activities rather than spending their time watching TV. It also helps them develop important skills and stimulates their brains to become the best they can be. It shapes who they will become by bringing out their inner artist abilities and allowing them to use their skills on creating pieces they can be proud of.

Craft Store Shopping vs. Internet Craft Shopping

Posted July 2nd, 2009 by admin

Traditionally, buying crafts would mean a trip to the craft store .However, we are in changing times. More and more people are beginning to shop for their crafts online. This is logical because buying from the Internet is more convenient than having to leave the comfort of your home. In this article, we will explore the benefits of both shopping online and offline at a craft shop.

Craft Store  Shopping

The obvious reason for shopping at a local craft store  is that there are no additional charges such as shipping costs. Also, the whole thing is right there in front of you. You can feel it, smell it, measure , or whatever you need to do when picking out crafts. If you have questions, there is someone right there to respond them. Whether you are unsure of what to purchase or if this will match or if that will fit properly, you will have the guidance of a customer service representative in front of you to assist you during your shopping experience.

Maybe a sure fabric was cut too short, or you got the wrong set of paints for a project, with the convenience of the craft store being right in your neighborhood, you can easily return it and get what you want instead (or obtain your money back).

Returning things that you have bought online is a bit more difficult as you have to pay for shipping it back and you have to wait another week or two for the right materials to be shipped back to you. You do have customer service with online shopping, however it is usually in the form of email, phone, or live chat. You do not get to experience the personal one on one interaction that a craft store can provide.

Buying Crafts Online

Although there are certain things missing with shopping online like personal customer service and the ability to feel or quantify material before buying, the Internet does hold a whole new convenience to shopping for crafts

The first convenience is you can order what you need with a click of the mouse. There is no need to leave the house and drive off to a craft store. Everything can be done right from the comfort of your home. Also, you have more options when shopping online. You have the flexibility of shopping at more than one store. There are many stores online that you can browse through, so if one store doesn’t have what you are looking for, simply click on to the next store.

Another convenience that Internet shopping offers is plenty of discounts! You have more chance of saving money by shopping online than you do in a traditional craft shop. Ebay makes a good example. EBay is one of the major online sites that sell just about anything and everything starting as little as 99 cents. In some cases, there is not even a shipping charge when shopping on eBay.

Also, Internet shopping allows you to read other people’s experiences with certain crafts and materials. This way you can get an honest review of something before you buy it.

Both shopping at a craft store and shopping online have its advantages (and disadvantages), but at least you know you have the flexibility to get your crafts and materials where ever seems the best choice at the time.

Today, with the Internet being so popular, you can find many different activities for your child to do online. There are countless computer games, educational activities, video games and more. There are also interactive websites that allow your child to get creative with coloring sheets. Your child can color either online filling in shapes and animals with color by the click of a mouse or offline by printing out coloring pages for them to color with crayons or coloring pencils.

We all know kids love to color. It allows them to get creative and express themselves artistically. Instead of sitting your child in front of the TV or a video game (and yes, even 5 year olds are playing video games now), why not turn on your computer and printer and allow them to create colorful masterpieces. You can also make your own with your photo-editing software

You do not have to worry about not finding enough sites that allow you to print out coloring sheets for your kids. There are plenty of sites to find such as Disney and Nickelodeon to more individually owned sites and they are all free. All you need is a printer and either crayons, markers, coloring pencils or paints.

Coloring sheets go way beyond simply printing and coloring though. There are many other fun things you and your child can do with these coloring pages. Let us explore just a few of these creative ideas.

1. Having a birthday party? Why not create your own party theme. Why go out and buy countless coloring books in the hopes that they match the party theme your child picked out, when you can search coloring sheets in pretty much any theme on the Internet. Does your child want Winnie the Pooh or Sponge Bob? Let them choose and simply print out for the kids to color later on during the party.

2. T-shirt making can be a fun activity to do with your child. Print out coloring pages and then color, scan, and print onto iron on transfer paper. Then simply iron onto your t-shirts.

3. Christmas decorations are easy to make. Print out some Christmas related coloring pages and have your child color them in. Then work together hanging them up in the windows and doors.

It just takes a bit of imagination when working with coloring sheets. The creative possibilities are endless. What a fun way to get your child to express themselves and show how far their imaginations will go. It takes nothing more than a computer, printer, coloring supplies, and your child’s ambition.

Revisit Your Childhood with a Model Train Set

Posted June 30th, 2009 by admin

In recent years there has been nothing short of an explosion in interest in model trains and railways. Some people think this is due to baby boomers now buying train sets for their children, keen for them to experience the fun that they can recall having as children.

There is no denying that this is certainly the case for me. I am one of those baby boomers and I have fond memories of many hours spent with my brother and father building sometimes elaborate model railway systems. We completely transformed our dining room into what we called our railway room with a huge, elaborate system of tracks and buildings. We managed to keep the track set up in our railway room right up until Christmas when family guests for Christmas dinner meant that my mother insisted that we dismantle the track and return the railway room to its preceding dining room status. I can distinctly recall how disappointed my father was when he was forced to dismantle and box up the train track, locomotives and trackside buildings.

In fact, reflecting on those days, I think it was doing things with my father that was more important to me than the model railway. My father was never inclined to play any field sports and only ever took an apparently cursory interest in my school work. But when it came to model trains and railways his eyes would light up and he suddenly became very enthusiastic. The only way to get my father to put his newspaper down and leave his armchair was to suggest we turn on the model railway system.

Model trains are good for any age, providing a fun, rewarding and engaging hobby. Model trains are not toy trains. Good quality model trains are scale models of the real thing that can provide a valuable learning aid, helping young and old to understand the development of rail transport.

Way back in the 1850s Marklin, a German manufacturer of dolls-house accessories, introduced the first boxed train-set. This was intended to broaden their market by appealing to boys. They were also responsible for producig accessories for their train sets including trackside buildings. The company are still going strong today.

Electric powered trains are reputed to have been introduced by the American company Carlisle and Finch in 1897 but it was the Lionel Corporation who were responsible for developing the product. Their first Electric train, called the Electric Express, was actually not intended for sale. It was originally intended to be used as a storefront display.

Jump forward to today and you will find many fathers, like myself, who have fond memories of many hours shared with their fathers building and playing with model train sets. We buy systems for our own children but, in truth, its more about us re-visiting our own childhoods and the happy times that we spent with our trains.

Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was born on 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany, the second daughter of Otto Frank (1889–1980) and Edith Frank-Holländer (1900–45). Margot Frank (1926–45) was her elder sister.

The Franks were liberal Jews and lived in an assimilated community of Jewish and non-Jewish citizens, where the children grew up with Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish friends. The Frank family did not observe all of the customs and traditions of Judaism.

Edith Frank was the more devout parent, while Otto Frank, a decorated German officer from World War I, was interested in scholarly pursuits and had an extensive library; both parents encouraged the children to read.

For her thirteenth birthday on 12 June 1942, Anne received a book she had shown her father in a shop window a few days earlier. Although it was an autograph book, bound with red-and-green plaid cloth and with a small lock on the front, Anne decided she would use it as a diary, and began writing in it
almost immediately. While many of her early entries relate the mundane aspects of her life, she also discusses some of the changes that had taken place in the Netherlands since the German occupation. In her entry dated 20 June 1942, she lists many of the restrictions that had been placed upon the lives
of the Dutch Jewish population, and also notes her sorrow at the death of her grandmother earlier in the year. Anne dreamed about becoming an actress. She loved watching movies, but the Dutch Jews were forbidden access to movie theaters beginning 8 January 1941.

Seven months after her arrest, Anne Frank died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, within days of the death of her sister, Margot Frank. Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that her diary had been saved, and his efforts led to its publication in 1947. It was translated from its original Dutch and first published in English in 1952 as “The Diary of a Young Girl”.

The diary, which was given to Anne on her 13th birthday, chronicles her life from 12 June 1942 until 1 August 1944. It has been translated into many languages, has become one of the world’s most widely read books, and has been the basis for several plays and films. Anne Frank has been acknowledged for the quality of her writing, and has become one of the most renowned and most discussed victims of the Holocaust.

Tips For Buying Children’s Dance Shoes

Posted June 30th, 2009 by admin

Looking for children’s dance shoes can be quite a feat. You may not know the exact shoe size of your child as dance shoe sizes are often different from normal shoes sizes. A challenge in looking for children’s dance shoes is the vast variety of brands offered. You’ll probably ask yourself what are the exact differences between brands? Is it really necessary to buy a brand that is more expensive? I’m not so sure that qualifies for making the shoe any better? You’ll find that just because the shoe is more expensive, doesn’t mean that it is that much better quality.

Here are 3 good tips to help you find children’s dance shoes:

Read online reviews
Reading reviews of products online is your best bet for finding the perfect brand, fit, or style of children’s dance shoes. You have the ability to hear directly from other mom’s who have bought a certain brand and if they would recommend it. Reviews are handy when you have selected a brand because you can find information about that brand online quickly and from people who have had experience with that brand so you know for sure.

Inquire about which brands are known for each discipline to the dance instructor
Turn to your child’s dance teacher for help. Depending on the dance discipline your child is in (ballet, tap, jazz) there usually isn’t one brand that fits all. The dance teacher probably is knowledgeable about all types of dancing and can tell you, for example, which shoe brand would be better for tap and which would be better for ballet. If you use this method of going straught to the professional, you’ll surely find the right children’s dance shoes.

Select the brand based on durability, not price
Chances are, if you purchase dance shoes for your child, they are going to wear them out fairly quickly. That can vary depending on the brand. Some are sturdier and will last a couple of dance seasons, eventually saving you money. If your child is a ballet dancer, Capezio would probably be the brand to consider as they’re known for durability and comfort for the arch of the foot. If your looking for jazz shoes, Bloch may be a great brand to start looking at. Just make sure you do your research and don’t just pick a shoe based on the cheapest price. You could have to end up replacing the shoe faster than your child will grow out of it.
