Suggestion: Every year after Thanksgiving, teach your children about the spirit of Christmas (or whatever, if you aren’t Christian) and have your kids select x% of their toys to give to Goodwill, etc. in time for them to go to other kids for Christmas. They might also want to use their own money to buy a new gift to donate along with their used toys.
I feel really bad….but you need to get rid of toys so they dont pile up. My kids had so many toys especially little happy meal ones. I went through their room when they werent home and got rid of a bunch. The good thing about kids is that they really dont remember all the little toys so it is eaiser to get rid of them. Do they even play with half of them…? LOL mine dont. Dont feel bad its better to have a few amount of toys for them and keep the ones that they will play with all the time. Trust me they will forgive you later.
YES, but there is always the grandparents or us who buy them toys about every week. If I don’t get rid of some especially the ones that are already old and not working I would need just a whole bedroom just for their toys!! And extra room is what we don’t have! Just do it when they are asleep that’s what I do, if they ask for it I just tell them the truth then, that its in the trash because it doesn’t work anymore and then show them another toy that I know they love. If they catch me throwing it away I show them why I’m throwing it away.
Kids today have so many bits and pieces they wont miss a few from time to time. I havent felt guilt because what I gave away would bring pleasure to another child. I never gave away special toys and as they got older I included them in the choice of what to give away so that someone else could have some fun.
My son and I get rid of his old toys together. He is pretty good at getting rid of things he doesnt play with anymore. I found that it helps to involve them when throwing things out. If your children still fuss about it then do it when they arent home or doing something else. Good luck.
No it gets rid of so much stuff they don’t need. I always do it when my daughter is sleeping or at preschool, then she doesn’t fuss about it. She never knows anything is missing.
oh no. i know my kids don’t even play with most of their toys. i used to go all out at holidays, but now i get them very few things so they are not overwhelmed.
i don’t get rid of my daughter’s toys, unless they are ruined or broken. Even then I feel bed, i look at it as they arent mine and i have no right to do anything with them. When i was young i didnt have many toys and i want her to have everything and i just can’t bring myself to do it.
I just finished packing a bunch of my 5 yr old’s toys for a yardsale. I told her her room was too crowded & she needed to help me go through toys she didn’t play with anymore. She was a champ! Only 2 or 3 things I wanted to get rid of but she couldn’t part with. I do this every year before Chrismas too.

No. I got so tired of cleaning them up that I was happy to get rid of them. We went from 4+ toy boxes to one small one
