He doesn’t chew up furniture or shoes or carpet its just his toys. He only has 2 toys that aren’t ruined (thankfully). I give him a ball and he tears all the fuzz off, give him a rope toy and he tears at it until its unraveled, stuffed animals are out of the question. He is a yr old australian shepherd mix.
he has the new toy for like 15 minutes then its ruined. I don’t care that he plays with it but he’s eating the rubber tennis balls that he’s destroying and the rope toys.

That’s what dogs do.. Occasionally there are dogs that are nice with their toys and carry them around like babies and don’t ruin them. But most of the times dogs enjoy shredding and tearing their toys apart. If you don’t like it, get something that can’t be destroyed.. A kong, or a plantation rubber ball… Things that are tough to chew.

My dog does this. When she gets a new toy she plays with it for about a week and then will tear it to shreds.I think that she just thinks that since its her toy she can do what she wants with it. I say just let him do as he wishes and be glad its his toys he destroys and not your house.

That is what the toys are for! The toys are for the dog to play with and take his aggression out on and destroy - so he doesn’t destroy other things. Just take away the toys if they get to the point where they could pose a danger to the dog - pieces that are small enough that he could choke on them, etc. And then replace them with new toys. You can always buy stronger, tougher toys if you don’t want him to go through them as fast. You have a working breed dog and if he doesn’t have a job, he probably has a lot of pent up energy that he is taking out on his toys.

I thought that was what dog toys were for. At least he’s not destroying your house.

My dog did this too. It was the worst when we would go over to my in-laws who had a dog. Our dog would shred all of their (old) dogs toys!
First… your dog is still young. Very much in a puppy stage of destruction. Be VERY thankful that he knows what is a dog toy and what is people property!!
Buy bones and tough rubber toys for now. Kongs are great. They say they are indestructable… but I’ll be the first to tell you that even a kong will submit to a large puppy and his teeth!
Also, keeping all his toys in a basket may help. When you clean up the toys and designate a special place for them to be, your dog sees them as more important.
My dog is now 3. A few years ago I would swear that I would never buy him a stuffed toy. But Christmas time I got him the long, squeeky stuffed dog (Bobo on the commercials) from PetSmart… and it is still fully in tact today!
So.. be patient, buy tough toys, or buy a bag of tennis balls and just replace one after he destroys one. Eventually he’ll get out of the puppy destruction phase and you can save on toy money!

Ok, there are a couple of things about this…
firstly, increasing excercise (making it harder and faster) will help…tired doggies (esp herding breeds like aussies) are happy doggies.
Second, Aussies are working dogs..if you don’t give them a job, they will develop bad behaviors to alleviate anxiety (like destroying toys, barking, digging etc.) take your dog to training classes, esp agility classes, or herding classes..this will certainly help you aussie be a happier pup all around.
Most pups will destroy their toys…but if you do these things it will decrease the viciousness of the toy destruction..and will calm your pup and increase his happiness.
good luck, you have a very smart, very awesome breed of dog…just remember, your working together (excercise) will increase your health and you and your dogs bond…and training in agility or herding will definately increase your bond and your babies happiness.
