kids toys
Melba asked:

My kids are both really sick right now and I’m trying to disinfect as much as I can. Their plastic tinker toys are what they play most with so I want to clean them but don’t know how. Any advice?
My kids are 4 and 6 so they won’t be putting them in their mouth

Dont use alot of bleach & rinse well.

Yes - that should work - but rinse them well so that there is not any bleach residue on them.

I don’t think you have to put pure bleach on them, but can dilute the bleach. Yes, it will disenfect the surfaces.

Make sure they wash their hands a lot.

bleach with hot water would be fine, or if you have a dish washer that would work too.

I would NOT use bleach! Cause you know they will be putting the toys in their mouths as soon as you get ‘em back. Use anti-bacterial soap and a bucket of warm water.

How about anti bacterial dish soap? that way you won’t lose the color of the toys

Plastic might absorb bleach, leaving toys toxic. Boil them in a large pot of water.

I wouldnt use straight bleach! They do have certain types of bleach and other stuff made drectly for that use! Im not sure what it is called tho!

I think instead of bleach, I’d use vinegar because it will clean them and then if they accidentally stick them in their mouth or just playing with them after they’re cleaned it won’t smell/taste so bad and they’ll still be disinfected.

I think the bleach solution will fade the colors.Maybe not but I would test one or two before you soak the whole lot of them. You could use an other type of disinfectant such as Lysol or Mr clean. Any anti-bacterial cleaner. Or if it is really cold where you are, stick them outside for a few hours. I believe a good freeze will kill a lot of things including dustmites.

if you put them in bleach, you will disinfect them but also bleach them, they will not look very good afterwards.. faded, old.. i recommend pooring just some disinfectant like 409. into a bucket of water and soak them.. much more effective and wont harm the toys.

yes it will but make sure you add only a table spoon or so to each gallon of water.

It’s OK to disinfect once in awhile using the right dilution of bleach. To disinfect now will obviously not stop their illnesses, but might help stop spreading it. Most people use too much bleach. Trying to sterilize everything may actually cause problems.

One cup bleach to one gallon of water. Soak for ten min. or so, then rinse thoroughly. That’ll do the job quite effectively.

Try that new Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface spray. I use that all the time around my home. My son’s bringing cold germs home from school & his friends almost daily. This has helped keep me from getting sick.

Also, wash your hands with antibacterial soap, like Softsoap’s 2in1 Antibacterial with Real Moisturizing Lotion.

I would not use bleach ….. I would find a good antibacterial soap and wash them

You can easily sterilize the toys using boiling water like you do with bottles. This will get rid of all of the germs and still make them safe to play with. They may not put the toys in their mouth, but the bleach residue would be on their hands too, so that still would not be safe. Also, buy some anti-bacterial spray, like Lysol to use on other areas of the house.

I would not use bleach it could soak in the plastic and make them toxic. I would use anti-bacterial dish soap that should work.
Plus I think there are lots products that are made for cleaning children’s toys. Since they are made for that they should be safe on kids. I hope your kids get well soon!

Use the bleach techinque for a last resort. try this solution. in a container or spray bottle and put one part vinegar and two part water . spray the toys with the solution and let it dry. it will smell like vinegar but at you know within a day or two it will be sanitize.
