The evolution of toys over the last hundred years is truly staggering. We have all but said goodbye to the traditional, individually handmade toys and now embraced mass-produced electrical toys that have lights and sounds and eat batteries like grains of rice. Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic traditional toys and why they were loved so much
Rag dolls. These toys are beautifully simplistic. They were once the coolest toy to have and everywhere a child would go, her rag doll would go with her. Among their most appealing features was the ability to wash them simply by dunking them in warm water and not having to worry about bits breaking or falling off. These days Barbie and crying replica babies are all the rage. These cannot be washed using the same method but I would encourage you to give it a go.
Wooden bikes. Due to bike makers wanting to make the biggest profit they can, most bikes these days are constructed of metal or some form of plastic. You cannot beat however a hand-crafted bike made out of high quality hardwood. They didn’t break down anywhere near as much as modern bikes do and the aging wooden looked beautiful. On top of this, having an old wooden bike a room added a lot of character to it and people even bought them just for their aesthetic value
Rocking horses. Much like the wooden bike, a rocking horse made from fine wood not only looked stunning in any home but also lasted a lifetime due to its simple yet effective design. The best bit about a rocking horse however is that you can buy your daughter what she has always dreamed of, without having to hire stables and muck it out every day. Rocking horse manufacture has slowed down a great deal in the last 10 years, but you can still find some quality ones in some good shops.
