It may be fun for them and teach them about sharing as well as money if they were allowed to keep a portion of the sale money. For every toy or other unused item they donate to the sale, they can get to put the sale funds in their piggy bank. You could also set up a small lemonade or icetea stand at the yard sale if they are old enough to help and tell them they can keep all of the money they earn. It teaches them about money and budgeting early, as well as social skills.

My kids are 17 and up.
They helped with the garage sale as well. So….
I used the time and money for them to learn the value of a buck.
I let them know it was for them and they could save it or blow it. It was more of a convo then I will place here. But you get the idea.
Only one of them saved there money. The other two bought candy and game stuff.
Now that there more grown…you know what, the child who saved is 21 now and has over 2,000 in the bank saved. The other two have maybe 15 bucks in there.
I guess they never learned. Grrrr.

We put all proceeds from our lawnsales in a vacation jar. The only $ that does not go in the jar is spent on lunch for that day.

If they are giving up a prized toy then it’s their money.
Remember gifts are given, you don’t take them back.
Have them put the money in the bank

I’m sure we’re not talking about thousands of dollars here,
This maybe a great oppurtunity to teach your kids the basics of money management, sit down with them and talk about the importance of saving and responsible money spending.
Save some of it and let them spend some of it

some of it depends on what the item is…. also asking the kids to help out helps them learn a bit how the econemy works in a way!!! having a product and selling it…. putting half of their earnings away for collage fund and the rest if they see something they might want while shopping!!
So it teaches them how to save and if they really want stuff they need to work for it and that its not just given to them on a silver platter!!
I just keep the monies that were from items I put in the sale!

If they helped out, then I’d give them a share of it and bank the rest or put it towards functional stuff.
If they didn’t help, then just bank it for use for functional items, or something around the house.
If they’re too young to help, then I’d put it towards something the house needs, have a nice little outing or just bank it. A nice day-trip with the family or dinner out is always a nice treat depending on how much is made.
Usually the reason toys are going out the door is because new toys are coming in - so I’d not want to be getting more!
I try to bank at least half for use in the future when needing things so you can tell them that they contributed towards it and learn that saving up gets you good stuff!
