kids toys
Anna H asked:

…which is powered by 1 AA battery Hoping to buy online within the Uk, thanks
The ratings are stamped onto the silver ’screw-in’ part of the bulb. It says 1.1Vo. 3A. The toy is a camera and the bulb is in the ‘flash’ which just lights up for a split-second each time the button is pressed, it is not lit for any longer than that. Does that help at all?
John K, it probably is .3A. There is a ‘dot’ after the Vo and before the 3, I thought that related to the abbreviation of volt but perhaps is is .3 not 3.
I meant to say the shape of the bulb is neither straight nor round, but more like a ‘teat’ shape if that makes sense.
Thanks for the Maplin link. The bulb looks exactly like the Lens end MES type in appearance but are those ones too high in volts for what I’m looking for?
John that is v kind of you. Thank you. I can send you a sae no problem, can you email me your address?

Chet

I think you must be mistaken about the ratings. An AA battery can’t provide anything like three amps (the “3A” part) for more than a few minutes.

Where did you find the bulb ratings? What are the dimensions of the bulb, particularly the ***** base part?

I think the poster intended to say 0.3A, there are various sizes of miniature lamps, some are called LES which means Lilliput Edison ***** and there there is MES which is Miniature Edison *****.
The LES types generally have a straight tubular glass bulb about 4mm diameter whereas the MES have a round glass bulb about 8mm diameter at a guess.
I think you will have to go for the 1.25 Volt bulb (perfectly acceptable) which is 0.3A rated, if it is the MES type of course. Take some measurements and send me an e-mail.
Have a look at the link below for the Maplin website which is a nationwide chain of popular electronics shops (may even have one myself).

OK, the teat end lens thingy is fine, as long as you know it’s diameter is approx 9mm across the metal thread then we know it’s the right one.
The lens end type is designed to give maximum light through the end rather than a round glass type which gives light in all directions.
The way some gadget manufacturers work is to use a bulb slightly lower in voltage than the battery voltage, this will make the bulb brighter but reduce the life of the bulb as it is working at a higher voltage than it is rated.
Other manufacturers will do things the proper way and use a bulb rated higher than the battery voltage, thus prolonging the life of the bulb but making the light output lower.

I just happen to have a lens end bulb of MES type (9mm diameter) rated at 2.4V and 0.3A which you can have gratis, I just need an s.a.e. to cover postage costs. This is new and works just fine with a 1.5V AA cell.
